SLOW ROCKS
Slow Rocks is a series of animations initially exhibited as part of Far Afield’s Touchstones: Deep Time in the Near Future (2018).&#38;nbsp;

Each rock is sculpted as a 3D model with hand drawn textures or created out of moding clay and made to act in unusual ways. In both examples these ‘rocks’&#38;nbsp;take the geological as a proposition of malleability and movement, using mineral abstractions as a way to invite a closer and more attentive look.

THE INTERSTITAL SEASKAGEN: 7,150 steps, 4,200 meters, 175 frames/meter

	&#60;img width="901" height="586" width_o="901" height_o="586" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e4e16640da5872f8a9fdc9c8d1cadb9e951baabfe4a831fe894f9f7229da4c36/Skagen.png" data-mid="68094051" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/901/i/e4e16640da5872f8a9fdc9c8d1cadb9e951baabfe4a831fe894f9f7229da4c36/Skagen.png" /&#62;

Standing, feet submerged in between two opposing seas, staring at a distant horizon—the sun sets. This far north the light very rarely goes out. The interlocking waves crash and push against each other. The wind roars and sand blows past, rushing out towards the water, where everything else seems to be going. Including you. But you remain here, watching this landscape and feeling its force, as the waters pull and coalesce around you. This meeting point is an incipient place and you are watching and waiting for the weather to change.

	&#60;img width="1900" height="1282" width_o="1900" height_o="1282" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/097ea3ee312e55b70c757085b83115236b37c5a9eec4574f58f913d555cb34f5/Skagen-1899.png" data-mid="68095871" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/097ea3ee312e55b70c757085b83115236b37c5a9eec4574f58f913d555cb34f5/Skagen-1899.png" /&#62;

&#60;img width="1899" height="1297" width_o="1899" height_o="1297" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c730f40b80b941ca69721114f893c655b76e95c32a9fa03c7ff63835135d78c6/Skagen-Ortho-Photo-2009.png" data-mid="68095870" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c730f40b80b941ca69721114f893c655b76e95c32a9fa03c7ff63835135d78c6/Skagen-Ortho-Photo-2009.png" /&#62;

The work responds to Norman McLaren’s oft cited definition which states that:

Animation is not the art of drawings that move but the art of movements that are drawnWhat happens between each frame is much more important than what exists on each frameAnimation is therefore the art of manipulating the invisible interstices that lie between frames.

	The point on Grenen beach, near the town of Skagen, Denmark where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet is the inspiration for The Interstitial Sea. At Skagen, the bodies of water differ in salinity and as a result do not overlap. Instead a line is formed where the two waters meet. Standing at this point in Skagen enables an experience that limits and enlivens the interplay between force and movement first hand. Skagen’s coalescing seas serve as the impetus to explore movement in animation – contrasting fluid movement with interstitial action.
This place and its invisible current, represent the process of frame-by-frame animation. Both the current and the animator’s agency are invisible, yet they are what generate movement. The effects of these actions are what the spectator can experience. The line that forms between the North and Baltic Sea is the visible element whose movement is a result of the current. It is a line that both disrupts and moves fluidly as it skirts the edges of each sea. Through the hand-drawn line, the animations map the invisible force of the current, bringing attention to the illusory qualities of movement.
The Interstitial Sea was first realized in a shipping container located on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC and was part of a collaborative projected entitled Hyphenated Sites.
&#60;img width="500" height="498" width_o="500" height_o="498" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9d430022fc3de5f86f6ad1a6bd3ea2e3bf1734a6a35f3df65f9c6497e6ba4acd/LittleWaves_xsmall.gif" data-mid="68238051" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/500/i/9d430022fc3de5f86f6ad1a6bd3ea2e3bf1734a6a35f3df65f9c6497e6ba4acd/LittleWaves_xsmall.gif" /&#62;

	 Comprised of twelve animation in a six-minute loop on 4 projectors,&#38;nbsp;The Interstitial Sea&#38;nbsp;considers how formal representations of a line in motion can extend into a space in order to define or disrupt it.
 Each animation uses a unique material process to explore the possibilities of the active interval and convey the feeling of moving water through animated lines.

		<description>
EXPERIMENTS IN LINE AND SEAExperiments In Line and Sea is a short, hand-drawn animated film that explores the feeling of moving water through lines and simple marks. It involves a series of short scenes that use a variety of drawing processes to convey the feeling of movement. Sound throughout the film is comprised of musical scoring, edited composition and abstract soundscapes. The music is composed by Nathan Richards and is in the key of C. The instruments used varied between clanging metals, vibrating strings and radio static. The static consisted of white noise and pink noise. Alternating between the two frequencies created the sonic effect of moving water.Comprised of nine different scenes, Experiments in Line and Sea can be described as follows:
a continuous linea line that grows larger and largercurved lines that move outwards towards the edge of the screentwo lines move towards each other and then back again&#38;nbsp;small marks that flicker around the screensmall splashes often descending into concentric circlesa mass that moves towards youlong lines that move across the screen and then scatter into nothinga wavy line

	Experiments In Line and Sea was the result of multiple experiments using different types of drawing materials in bright green to emulate the effects of chroma-key. This specific tool in digital cinema enables the replacement of all the areas of green, with the corresponding parts of another. In the digital world, objects covered with this specific green can be made to be anything. They become stand-ins for any other kind of surface, but their physical presence remains a cue for alternative possibilities.&#38;nbsp;In Experiments In Line and Sea, chroma key, became representative of the active interval between frames in animation -an invisible force that can be manifested in an infinite number of ways. The final version of the animation was drawn entirely on pieces of paper from a 4x5’ sketchpad.&#38;nbsp;Various techniques and processes were used to animate the film. They all involved an exploration into how the specific decisions made in the invisible space between each frame became mechanics through which the illusion of movement is created and experienced. These processes include but are not limited to, rotoscope, drawing backwards, randomization of frame numbers and placing a number of sketchbook pages in a linear sequential order to create one continuous drawing. This last process removed the active interval altogether. The line was drawn across the cuts of the frame.

		<description>COLOUR FIELDS
Colour Fields is a short digital animated loop. It consists of thirteen individual layers each a distinct colour (dark red, red, pale blue, light green, teal, dark blue, light yellow, peach, light blue, pale green, purple, pink and orange). Each layer of the animation involved a series of moving and evolving lines of various sizes, which shift back and forth between marks or dots in a continuous loop.&#38;nbsp;

I am fascinated by various attempts at drawing the illusions of movement inherent to the process of frame-by frame animation. This fascination stems from creating at a very early age drawings of objects by either scribbling a constant continuous line or by drawing multiple lines in succession. These drawings were as much about learning how to represent objects in space as they were studies in representing objects through movement.
Colour Feilds was part of a series of projection experimentation in an installation which uses form and light to propose new possibilities for spatializing a film experience.&#60;img width="3729" height="2103" width_o="3729" height_o="2103" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/73cfedbc87afd9738ab9a6de67428eeefb40030c8bd80038621cae0a6d07b297/IMG_4798.jpg" data-mid="67796511" border="0" data-scale="83" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/73cfedbc87afd9738ab9a6de67428eeefb40030c8bd80038621cae0a6d07b297/IMG_4798.jpg" /&#62;

	&#60;img width="3293" height="5089" width_o="3293" height_o="5089" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/71ffd9cd3ed3997b9dc2d53a521af5ad9e3b823e809d2d39c78a27851279a813/rainbow.jpg" data-mid="67930762" border="0" data-scale="99" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/71ffd9cd3ed3997b9dc2d53a521af5ad9e3b823e809d2d39c78a27851279a813/rainbow.jpg" /&#62;

	Experiment no. 4: In a Hole in the Floor is the result of a series of experiments that explored the moment between frames. This in-between space in animation is the ability to see movement as it takes place. Movement in animation is created by small changes not displacements. These changes are dynamic and happen constantly. The change in animation is the active interval. It is a signifier for that which is about to happen when animating forms. Adding movement to an already-executed pose means adding movement to something that is completed, when in fact animation should be about propelling a sense of movement that is constantly in a state of becoming. It is felt and it is experienced. When a series of animated images are placed in a sequence and looped, that process of propelled movement has the potential to occur infinitely. In animation, objects in motion span different points, instances and relations between each other. The animated object is never constant; it can shift, morph and dance in infinite space on a trajectory that is rarely stable.
